App Creation: Flip U

This capstone project, part of my J202 (Mass Communication Practices) coursework at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, was a unique and challenging experience. Unlike typical assignments, we were given a “blank canvas” to envision, develop, and launch our own online and mobile information product aimed at a specific audience. The project was designed to simulate a real-world media environment, demanding that we apply our cumulative skills in information gathering, strategic communication, content creation (across text, audio, image, and video), and digital delivery.

A critical underlying element of this project was team collaboration and effective communication. Our entire lab worked together as a large group, subdivided into four specialized teams, including Strategy and Project Management, Platform, Content, and Pitch. This structure emphasized the importance of seamless teamwork to move our product from its initial creative spark to a finished pitch.

The ultimate goal was to present our idea and strategy to a panel of “angel investors” and classmates, who will critique our product’s strategy, content, design, and business model, much like in a real “Shark Tank” scenario.

For this project, my team developed “Flip University,” a novel and innovative buying and reselling app designed specifically for UW-Madison students to use in their daily lives.

My Role: Pitch Team & Strategic Communicator

As a core member of the Pitch Team for “Flip University,” my primary responsibility was to articulate our product’s value proposition, market strategy, and revenue potential to a panel of expert stakeholders. This role demanded a blend of strategic thinking, persuasive communication, and project management to ensure our innovative concept landed effectively with our “angel investors.”

Key Contributions:

  • Developed Revenue Strategy: Collaborated closely with the team to define and articulate “Flip University’s” potential revenue streams, ensuring a clear and viable path to financial sustainability was presented to the investors.
  • Designed Promotion Plan: Created a comprehensive strategy for promoting our digital product to its specific target audience of UW-Madison students, identifying key channels, messaging, and engagement tactics.
  • Crafted Strategic Content & Multimedia Assignments: Created the alignment of strategic communication pieces and persuasive multimedia packages within the broader project, ensuring they supported our promotional goals and reinforced “Flip University’s” core message.
  • Led Winning Stakeholder Presentation: Was a primary presenter in the seven-minute “Shark Tank”-style pitch, clearly explaining “Flip University’s” concept, identified target market, unique value propositions, and detailed business model to a panel of experts. This involved bringing everything together, all ideas into a compelling, highly visual, and engaging narrative under a strict time limit, ultimately securing angel investors and leading to a winning presentation.
  • Authored an Advanced Backgrounder: Designed and wrote a concise, one-page backgrounder document for “Flip University.” This critical piece of strategic communication summarized our app’s executive concept, identified market gaps for UW-Madison students, explained how our solution addressed those needs, and outlined our vision for future success, adhering to strict professional standards and design principles (e.g., CRAP design principles).

This experience provided invaluable hands-on practice in strategic planning, public speaking, persuasive writing, and cross-functional team leadership, culminating in a tangible product presentation that simulated real-world venture pitches from a “blank canvas” concept to a successful investment pitch.
